FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
FIRST VISIT:
WHAT WILL HAPPEN?
Your first visit will be longer than subsequent sessions.
In addition to details of your main complaint, a full case history will be taken, including asking about your medical history and information relating to your general state of health and your lifestyle.
Your tongue will also be examined and your pulse taken. This information will allow accurate Chinese Medical diagnosis to be made. You will then have your first treatment.
HOW WILL I FEEL?
The needles used in Acupuncture are very fine and most people do not feel the needle being inserted.
Once the needle has been inserted, your practitioner will position the needle so that you feel a sensation which is often described as a dull ache, tingle or numbness. This sensation wears off very quickly and is usually followed by a feeling of relaxation.
As each patient is individual, the sensation may be felt and described differently, however it is unusual for the experience to be painful in any way.
HOW OFTEN WILL I NEED TREATMENT?
Each patient is unique. Sometimes the effects of treatments are dramatic and only one or two treatments are required. With other patients, the effects are more subtle and a longer course of treatment may be necessary. This will be discussed with you onyour first visit, when a treatment plan will be agreed between you and your practitioner. As improvement occurs, treatments are less frequent but will be weekly at first where possible.
SHOULD MY DOCTOR KNOW?
If you are receiving treatment from your doctor, feel free to inform him or her that you are having Acupuncture or Chinese Herbal Medicine.
At your first visit, we will ask for your consent to write to your doctor with details of your treatment – however, if for any reason you object to this, we will respect your wishes. In most instances however your GP is not contacted.
IS IT SAFE?
Practitioners are bound by the British Acupuncture Council’s Code of Ethics and Code of Practice, which lay down stringent standards of hygeine and practice. All needles used are sterile and single – use.
Acupuncturists are also registered with Local Government and premises and practice are checked by them.
